WE ARE WHO WE ARE
The HBO series We are who we are is an eight-episode youth drama. It’s the latest project of Luca Guadagnino, director of 'Call me by your name' and 'Suspiria', in which he explores the sexuality in youth and in adulthood; demonstrating that our identity or what we think we are is something that is constantly changing.
Luca Guadagnino takes up his interest in filming and analysing something as human as the development of identity, desire and attraction. This development has been one of the most interesting aspects of this HBO series. Luca is focused on behaviour, personal growth, cinematic visual language and not plot.

Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer), an introverted young man who is traveling with his family from one destination to another, is moving to an American military base in Veneto in Italy due to the promotion that his mother gets in the military corpus. Step by step, Fraser makes new friend, Harper, while discovering who he really is. Fraser and Harper create their own bubble under which they feel protected and understood. A love relationship that doesn't matter if it is friendly or sentimental, because of their non-verbal language which is more powerful than all the words in the world. It's about the connection between them, rather than long dialogues that go nowhere.
It is very interesting how Luca Guadagnino plays with music, for example, to convey the isolation of the characters. Devonté Hynes (better known as Blood Orange) is responsible for the original soundtrack. As if it were a tribute to the artist, Luca closes the story with a very special Blood Orange concert in Bologna. In general, the music that sounds (Prince, Radiohead, David Bowie, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Chance The Rapper, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones) occupies more time in the series than the script itself, showing that there are feelings or emotions that are best described through songs, sounds or melodies.

The cast of We are who we are is doing fabulously. The character I have enjoyed the most is the one played by Alice Braga. Without great fanfare, the Brazilian transmits the ability to empathize with everyone, her kindness and attention to the rest and her sacrifice to see how people she loves are as happy as possible, despite the fact that this involves negative consequences for herself. This series surprised me a lot and It was really amazing to see the beauty of Italy, especially now, when we can't travel.
