BIG LITTLE LIES

“Big Little Lies” is a thriller dressed as drama with shades of black comedy. All episodes are structured around a murder. We don’t know exactly who was killed, but as the show plays out, we see flashbacks that explain the crime. The three protagonists are Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and Jane (Shailene Woodley). They know each other, because their children go to the same kindergarten. The series shows their lives that seem perfect at first, but despite their immense privilege, their problems are basically the same as everyone else: loneliness, unhappy children, even domestic abuse.
Madeline is a full-time mom who’s trying to keep her nurturer status over the high-powered career moms. Celeste is an enigmatic former lawyer whose husband crosses the line between passion and physical violence. Jane is a young single mom who moves to Monterey to give her son, Ziggy, a top-class education, but her flashbacks and dreams hint a tragic event in her past.

The success of the series is based on the actor's performances. It’s Kidman, unsurprisingly, whose plot is the most enthralling: in her visits to a therapist, Kidman presents one of the most complex and thoughtful portrayals of domestic abuse. I will always be fascinated by Kidman’s ability to step into the shoes of women as complicated as Celeste, but the biggest surprise for me was Shailene Woodley. After not the best performance in “Divergent”, I was happy to see her amazing acting skills in “Big Little Lies”. Despite of three extraordinary protagonists I have to mention also performances of Laura Dern (lawyer), Zoe Kravitz (woman married to Madeline’s ex) or Alexander Skarsgard (Celest’s husband).
The twisty and absorbing script, amazing performances, fascinating photos and great soundtrack (especially opening song "Cold Little Hearth") are the elements that together makes amazing wholeness. I highly recommend this series!
